We recently advertised the post of a part-time fundraiser for Hearts + Balls – but what’s the attraction of working with a charity?
For many, it’s the overwhelming desire to make a difference. While a corporate role might have the appeal of a steady job with a well-trodden path up the corporate ladder, it may not feel fulfilling or rewarding for your soul. If there’s a niggling desire to help make the world a better place, to have a job with a sense of purpose, considering a role in charity might tick that box.
It’s also an opportunity to align yourself with a cause that actually reflects your values, providing a sense of belonging and bringing purpose to your professional life. Additionally, it means you’re far more likely to work with people who share your values – people who positively support each other in working towards common goals.
Broadly speaking, charitable organisations look for a similar range of skills as a corporate employer. Running a successful fundraising campaign, for example, requires strategic planning and marketing experience similar to that desirable for launching an ad campaign for a new service or product.
Jobs in charities cover a whole gamut of disciplines, too – finance, communications, operations, commercial – affording the opportunity to gain a wealth of transferable skills and get involved in a broad range of activities. Given the often-tight budgets of charities, there’s plenty opportunity to think outside the box, come up with innovative projects and turn more creative ideas into reality.
It’s worth remembering, too, that as much as you value the aims of the charity, they will value you, your passion and commitment more than many other employers. However much you give to the job, what you get back will be invaluable – a life enriching experience, a sense of purpose and feelings of professional and personal satisfaction
Thinking about making a difference? Think about working for a charity.
