On Sunday 27 September 2026, Zak Morrison and three of his Whitecraigs rugby teammates – Mac, Callum and Struan – will take on the Loch Ness Marathon in support of Hearts & Balls.

A laudable enterprise – all the more so given the fact Zak fractured his neck on the pitch during a rugby match earlier this year. Hearts and Balls stepped in to support his recovery at the time – and Zak is now stepping out to give back to the charity.

Following Zak’s rugby accident, he turned to running as a way of maintaining his fitness and focusing on his recovery. Just as his teammates stood beside him on the rugby pitch, it came as no surprise when Mac, Callum and Struan agreed to join him for his very first race and take on this journey together.

“Having never been a runner before, Zak has worked incredibly hard in preparation for the marathon,” says his mum, Emma. “Since the start of the year, he has clocked up more than 400 kilometres of training, running through all kinds of weather and showing remarkable commitment and determination ahead of race day.”

The event promises to be a special occasion, with family and friends travelling to support the team. Several of Zak’s friends will also be running for other charities, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and camaraderie as everyone supports one another along the route.

Zak and his family have felt hugely supported by Hearts and Balls throughout their journey. While it was a community that they never expected to find themselves part of, they feel incredibly fortunate to have met so many inspiring people connected to the charity.

“One of the greatest benefits for Zak has been the opportunity to share his progress, challenges and concerns with others who truly understand the unique circumstances faced following life-changing injuries,” adds Emma. “That shared understanding, encouragement and practical support have been invaluable.

“The work carried out by Hearts and Balls goes far beyond supporting physical recovery. The charity provides emotional wellbeing support, guidance and connection not only for individuals navigating difficult circumstances but also for their families. The impact this has on people’s lives cannot be overstated.”

Zak and his family are eternally grateful for the kindness, friendship and support they have received, and they are proud to be able to give back through this fundraising effort.

If you’re able to donate to their JustGiving page, every contribution will help Hearts and Balls continue to support individuals and families when they need it most https://www.justgiving.com/page/zak-morrison-2?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=EM
